This “individualized” approach usually allows learners to complete their education and training faster than in traditional courses. Based on the internet technology, e-learning provide learning to a learner on demand and the learner can learn precisely when it is needed and anytime it is needed. This eliminates travel time and associated cost. Therefore, e-learning has the potential of lowering the cost of training to both organizations and individuals. This also enhances greater interaction and collaboration between students, fosters greater students/instructors contact, enhances computer and internet skills and draws from hundreds of years of established pedagogical principles. These are the features why most educational institutions in the world, most with their own online degrees, certificates, and individual courses’
- Lower costs of training: In a very large class, e-learning is more cost effective to deliver than face-to-face classroom training due to the cost replication on holding multiple class sessions. Definitely, e-learning will only deliver on session if the bandwidth can accommodate them simultaneously. In organizational training, the opportunity cost of training staff using e-learning is reduced because staff can still is doing the jobs and be involved in a self-paced-self-study course. Therefore, e-learning eliminates direct delivery cost in terms of trainers, course materials, travelling and accommodation. Reduced overall cost is the single most influential factor in adopting e-learning. The elimination of costs associated with instructor’s salaries, meeting room rentals, and student travel, lodging, and meals are directly quantifiable. The reduction of time spent away from the job by employees may be the most positive offshoot for organizations.
- Reducing time of training: There is a reduction in training time in e-learning due to learning compression which is from multimedia technology. However, e-learning can reduce the time it takes to train people because:
a) Learn only what he/she need to learn and skip others
b) Learners can go at their own pace and not at the pace of the slowest member of a group
c) No time is spent on irrelevant questions / topics introduced by other members of the class.
d) There is limited social interaction time
e) It takes less time to start and wind up a learning session
f) There is limited travel time for training
- Faster delivery: The throughput in e-learning delivery is higher than the face to face learning. It has the capability to deliver learning to many people at the same time in different parts of the world. While the capacity of delivering learning in the classroom-based face-to-face learning is limited is limited by the number of available classrooms and trainers.
- More effective learning: The younger generation learners tend to learn more using computers based instructions that other conventional teaching methods. However, not all things can be taught/learnt using computer based instructions. A good example is practically dominated learning. Although, so can be simulated using computers, there is a limited to these simulations. Therefore, e- learning is most suitable for information and knowledge, and processes and procedures based learning and can be made interactive and hands-on based on recent multimedia technologies available. This can increase a learners involvement/engagement, reinforces the learning experience, increase understanding, retention , confidence and application.
- Consistent delivery of content: With e-learning, it is possible to consistently deliver the same content with self-paced, self-study asynchronous learning because expert knowledge can be captured and communicated with a good e-learning and knowledge based systems. E-learning provides a wide pool of knowledge through the creation of a giant virtual library and unlimited information in the internet.
- More environmental friendly: Due to the fact that e-learning is currently based on information and communication technology (ICT), it is more environmental friendly and it is also a way of reducing the carbon prints on paper. Many e-learning courses can be designed to provide all its content online. It can save the life of trees by reducing paper usage.
