Limitations of e-learning

Limitations of e-Learning

E-learning have a lot of benefits as explained (as explained in my blog : benefits of e-learning) above but it also has some limitations. Presented here are some of the limitations of e-learning:

  • Required investment:  Since e-learning is based on the ICT, its major drawbacks are technology dependent and centers required investments in the equipment that support e-learning. First and foremost, any learner or organization that wants the benefits of e-learning must make the necessary upfront investment required of e-learning solutions, this include cost of hardware, software, internet and bandwidth. The startup cost may be expensive due to other developmental cost like import duties and so on. This may prevent some learners and organizations from benefiting from e-learning.
  • Quality of content:  Many teachers and facilitators are experts in their fields and can convert most of their course materials to online format. Course providers must develop the new technical skills to suit the new medium. Thus, they require e-learning course development skills.
  • Limited application:  E-learning is not effective for subjects that require physical exertion and practice such as sports and public speaking. However, e-learning can be a useful companion to traditional education for teaching background and technical information.
  • Learner’s self-limitation: A learner can be a limitation to e-Learning because the flexibility and learner-centered nature of e-Learning requires a high level of learner’s responsibility. A successful e-Learning learner must be disciplined, organized, self-motivated, and have good time management skills. E-Learners need to be highly self-motivated to take full advantage of the medium as often the online learning experience can be impersonal. Working through ‘packaged’ programmes can be irritating.
  • Cultural Issues: This can be an issue in schools/organizations students and staff are not allowed to use computers, let alone internet or e-learning.
  • Social Issues: Reduced social and cultural interaction can be a drawback. The impersonality, suppression of communication mechanisms such as body language, and elimination of peer-to-peer learning that are part of this potential disadvantage are lessening with advances in communications technologies.
  • Technology issues: After the required equipment has been acquired, the learners must be trained to use them effectively. Most e-Learning system involves basic equipment and a minimum level of computer knowledge in order to perform the tasks required by the system. A student that does not possess these skills, or have access to these tools, cannot succeed in an e-Learning program. Thus factors like computer literacy and digital divide will affect e-learning and degree of its effect depend on if the learners are most commonly technophobia and unavailability of required technologies.   May not be able to some disable learners with visual or physical impairments.
